Meaning of a Head Scarf

Wearing a head scarf can mean many things to many people. Sometimes they are just worn as a fashion statement, sometimes for warmth, but sometimes they have a deeper meaning. Whether you want to truly say something meaningful by wearing a head scarf, or you just want it to look good, here is a guide for you.

All About Head Scarves

There are many women who wear these head coverings for religious meanings. Orthodox Jewish wear them because their beliefs require them to cover their hair. Christian women wore them in Medieval times to show that they were married. Christian nuns still wear a version known as a habit or wimple.

Muslim women wear many different kinds of head scarves for religious reasons. In Russia, Russian Orthodox women wear one when they go to church to indicate their convictions. English speakers often call a head scarf of this style a babushka, but this is an incorrect use of the actual term. It really just means grandmother in Russian. African women often don them just as elaborate ornamentation.

Wearing a Head Scarf

If you want to just make a fashion statement, it is important to do a little research on any religious significance to ensure you don't make an unintentional statement. There has been a lot of controversy recently about Muslim head scarves in particular. Even celebrities have been bashed for wearing versions that hinted making a statement other than a fashion statement.

Most all of the ones that are worn for a religious purpose completely cover the head. They often also hang down over the shoulders and some even cover parts of the face. If you want to play it super safe when wearing your head scarf for just fashion, tie it in a band around your head with a knot in the back. You can also wear a head scarf that only covers the top of the head and does not wrap around the neck or drape on the shoulders.

Look online for the highest quality head scarves at the best possible prices. On the Internet you can find much more selection and variety than you could possibly hope to find in your local shops. The prices you find in virtual shops are also much lower than what you are likely to find in a physical store.

Ways to Tie a Scarf Around Your Neck

There are many ways to wear a scarf to be more fashionable. Here are some ways to achieve a modern-day chic and that eye-catching look.

The Josephine
The look of the Josephine is a knotted piece of bread used as snacks for drinks. This is a rather large knot so it would be best if the cloth is of a light material and the width of the cloth is narrow. Silk, rayon and satin are the best ones for this. Drape the scarf around your neck with the ends loosely hung. Take the left tail of the scarf and roll the cloth upwards to the body creating a knot with the other loose end at the back. Hold the scarf where the cloth forms a cross over and take the scarf in front of the loop from the right side behind the loose end. Bring that end over the loop and knot the loop and then pull. Leave the knot loose or tight, or even adjust the length of the scarf.

The Larks Head
This is one of the classic knots in use. Drape the tie around the neck with about one end a third longer than the other. Create a long fold near the center of the left end. Fold in half the knot from the loose end that would create two smaller loops. Take the right loose tail and feed it through the loopholes. By doing this, you would go behind all of the pieces and the knots can either be tightly woven or loosely held. To adjust the height of the knot, you simply need to slide the knot up and down.

The Bowline
This type makes a statement as one loose end is left on the shoulder. Drape the scarf evenly over your shoulders. Take the left end of the scarf and pull it upwards to your body to create the knot. Let the right tail run through the loophole from the front and then over into the left loose end. Return the right loose end to the loop but always stay behind the left end. Adjust the tightness and then toss the right end over the shoulder. Leaving the knot loose would definitely call attention to your neckline area, and would also look stunning by being playful with knot placement and drapery.

Other knots, usually practical ones, have often been used to tie scarves or ties. Apply these different styles and be adventurous with your everyday fashion.

How To Tie A Long Scarf Like The Celebrities Do

Fashion has really evolved into something that is almost in a state of experimentation and creativity has always been a major aspect of it. When it comes to accessories, gone are the days when only the classic scarves were worn around the neck. Long scarves are part of the cutting edge of fashion. Show off your superb fashion sense by knowing how to tie a long scarf.

First, you have to choose the kind of style that you want to do with the long scarf. There are actually many different styles of wearing it, from modern to traditional. You can style it on your hair like a headscarf or you can wear it around your waist as belt. You can also use it to accentuate your bust by wearing it just below the chest to give you that boost.

Now, take a long scarf and smooth it down so there are no ruffles or lumps in the material. Make sure that you have removed all the labels or that fold into the underside of the scarf. If you have to fold the scarf because it may be too long, be sure that you fold it correctly to the center and that the scarf is still symmetric.

Next, you hold the scarf in the position that you want it to be and just make sure that the width is the same all around. If you wear it on your head like a headband, just fold it into a smaller width and wear it depending on your own personal preference. If you want to wear it on your waist as a belt or to accentuate your bust, use a mirror or have someone help you to check whether you have done it correctly and not look lopsided.

After deciding on the style, make sure that the knots are tight and it can hold for the whole day. If you want to be safer, you can secure it on your hair with hair clips or pins so that it would not slide down or simply do a double knot with it. Just remember that you have to make sure that the nodes are as small as possible, especially if the fabric is thick, in order to avoid looking bulky or the knots end up bunching together at the back.

If you are still unsure about what you should do, you should go online and see videos that give tutorials on how to tie a long scarf. You can also view pictures of your favorite celebrities wearing a long scarf and get tips from the way they wear it.

The myth about only those with long necks can wear a long scarf is definitely just a myth. It just depends on how you wear them. Choose complementary or even contrasting colors to those of your outfit. You should collect long scarves in a wide variety of lengths, colors, and patterns, as well as different fabrics. After learning how to tie a long scarf, surely, this type of scarf will be one of your favorite accessories for years to come.

Head Scarves - How to Wear Head Scarf Tips!

The perfect head scarf... probably as old as the first fabric, mankind has been using pieces of cloth to wrap their necks with for warmth, tie around their waists as belts, or wrapped around their heads or hair as elegant head gear. Scarves are very versatile clothing accessories and are used by many for functional or even for fashionable purposes.

A piece can be worn on a cold and wintery night to serve as a protection for your neck and to give you the much needed warmth that your body needs at this time of the year. A thick, woolen type would be very appropriate, not only to wrap around your neck, but also as a shawl or a head cover too.

It can also give your hair and your head some protection from dust and the wind particularly if you are riding at the back of a convertible or even a motorcycle. When crossing the river or a lake on a ferry on a slightly windy day, a head scarf can protect your hairdo from being tossed away in the wind

If you are having a bad hair day, then using head scarves to cover your crown can give you some of the best and most fashionable solutions to your problem. A winter scarf may be too heavy or inappropriate for this purpose, so you can just use one with a lighter material for more flexibility. You can either tie your hair down with it or fully cover the whole area. You can do whatever you want with it and you are only limited by your creativity however there are certain considerations you need to check out first.

Preliminary Considerations in Using Scarves as Head Gear

The most important consideration when trying to use one as an adornment for the head is the type of material that it is made of. A textured fabric would be ideal to use for a head scarf as it will not be as slippery as compared to satin or even silk materials.

Such slippery materials would easily unknot themselves or they would easily slide off from the hair or the skin. A textured fabric would have more grip and would be more flexible to use, however avoid using a cotton scarf as it can cause hair breakage as it rubs against your hairline.

If you insist on using only the best materials like silk for your head gear, of course you can continue to do so but it would preferable to have a longer piece so you can fold and tie them up more readily and easily. Rectangular and elongated fabrics work well as head accessories as they provide more room for flexibility for folding and tying in whatever manner you want to go. If needed, you can use a brooch or a pin to put the scarf in place so it will not slide off.

The colors and designs of the scarves of your choosing should match or complement well with your skin color, hair color and your dress. It would not be wise to choose a design or color combination that would not work well for you. You can check both online and offline resources for tips on mixing and matching.

Another important consideration to take when using these pieces as fashion accessories is to maintain cleanliness. Hand washing and dry cleaning are the only advisable ways to clean these and the frequency of cleaning would depend on how often you wear the scarf.

Accumulation of dirt and dust couples by the oily secretions from your skin and hair can render the colors lifeless and lose their shine. Do not hang scarves to dry as this may cause deformations particularly on long and heavy pieces. Dry them out by placing on absorbent towels or cloth and then air dry them.

How to Tie a Sarong or Pareo

Sarongs are one of the most popular and universally accepted fashion trends from the tropical islands of the South Pacific. Throughout history, sarongs have been used in many different ways in many different countries throughout Asia and the South Pacific. The sarong is popular in tropical climates and makes great vacation wear.

Dorothy Lamour once wore a sarong many years ago throughout a film called "Her Jungle Love". One of the main reasons for the movie's success was purely due to fact that Miss Lamour was wearing a sarong.

Sarongs are inspired by the beautiful tropical lands around the world. Sarongs are flattering to most figure types and are very easy to wear. They come in many unique patterns, designs and motifs. In North America, the fabric of the sarong is generally quite light, 100% cotton, rayon or silk.

Some artists use a heliographic dyeing technique which involves the use of the sun, fabric and light sensitive dyes. It takes about 30 minutes of direct sunlight at 80 F to properly cure the dyes into the fabric. Hawaiian salt is sometimes used on fabric to create interesting patterns. Anything placed under the fabric creates a positive imprint, any under it creates a negative imprint. All of the designs are hand placed and the fabric has been dyed by hand. Some of the print arrangements on the fabric retell ancient Polynesian legends.

How to Wear and Tie a Sarong

With its one size fits all and variety of ways to wear it, the sarong is the perfect casual wear anywhere! There are many ways to wear sarongs. To wrap your sarong, first hold it horizontally behind you. To tie the sarong, hold it behind you with the top of the material centered at the small of your back. Tying your sarong just takes a little patience, practice and experimentation. There are many videos that show over 20 different ways for men and women to tie a pareo. Simply type "how to tie a pareo" on a search engine to see some videos to give you some ideas.

A long sarong makes a wonderful evening gown for a night on the town. The traveler may wrap a sarong as a beach cover up. For a skirt, hold the sarong lengthwise and wrap it around the waist. Worn over the shoulders and head, a sarong functions as a wind-breaker; wrapped around the neck, it becomes a muffler or scarf.

Although the structure of the sarong garment is quite simple, the variations are endless. Because sarongs are often brightly colored with beautiful patterns, they can also be used as decoration.

The most common way to wear a sarong is as a beach accessory. This fashion is acceptable for both men and women in many sarong-wearing communities. Consider practicing wrapping sarongs of different sizes around your body in front of a full length mirror.

In North America, sarongs are often used by women as a cover-up over swimwear. Certain wrap styles gives your sarong a tighter, sleeker fit and shows off a sexy silhouette.

A sarong does not only have to be for the beach, a woman could usee one while camping, and while wearing shorts and a shirt! Most international travelers know the virtue of carrying an extra change of clothing.

As casual wear, the soft cotton tubular sarong is very cool and comfortable. Everyday wear is often a sarong with a t-shirt. When you shop for batik, you may find the tubular sarongs still flat, with the final seam unsewn. Formal dress today consists of a beautifully patterned sarong, worn with a fine blouse. They border a traditional sarong with contemporary flair. The tubular cloths from this same area are women's sarongs. A sarong wrap around, flip-flops and beach shorts are great for walking or going almost anywhere.

Sarongs with high cut hips make your legs look longer and your bottom look trimmer. Some sarongs have fringes or other trims, although most have plain hems. Carry your sarong with you while touring tropical island destinations, as one must be worn while passing by churches or sacred sites.

Here are some actual uses to which the sarong has been put. With fringed edges on two sides, it is great as a body sarong, scarf, wrap, wall hanging, tablecloth, sheet, and more.

Wall Hanging

Uses of sarongs that are less conventional have been known to include, a sarong wall hanging or a sarong tablecloth. With fringed edges on two sides, it is great as a body sarong, scarf, wrap, wall hanging, or tablecloth. This can be used as a wall hanging or a sarong.

Wedding Dress Sarong

Your beach wedding dress sarong can even double as your honeymoon lingerie and your new husband will love it. All sarongs and pareos are handmade garments that are, one size fits all, full size in length. Our full size sarongs fit beautifully, whether you wear a size 2 or 22!
