Dressing up in 50's costumes for your sock hop event is a given. Not only do 50's costumes bring in the theme of the dance, 50's costumes also allow guests to have a fun time dressing up. Having a fun hairstyle to match your 50's costume can be very beneficial. Here are a few examples of hairstyles you can wear.
1. Classic Beehive: To get this look start by setting dry hair in large hair rollers. Roll sections of hair backwards. Once the rollers are out, pull the hair back in sections and tease. Get as much volume as possible and comb backwards, and use a clip or headband to hold it in place.
This hairstyle is called a beehive because of its shape. For inspirational ideas look at Audrey Hepburn's hair in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. This is a very elaborate hairstyle, so ask for help or go to a professional hairdresser.
2. Ponytail: A ponytail is a classic 50's hairstyle. It was simple and mainstream, making it a perfect match for a 50's costume or poodle skirt. All all the hair back (bangs and all) and tie a scarf around an elastic band.
3. Tight Curls: Use a small barrel curling iron to create short, curly hair. This style will only work for those with medium to shorter length hairstyles. It was commonly known as the poodle cut back in the day.
4. French Plait: French braids are another fun option. Create a french plait by braiding hair in glamorous fashions. Side french braids are a popular choice, or piling hair on the back of the head.
5. Bouffant: Use large roller curlers to create this fun hairstyle. Similar to a beehive, though no where near the height, you will need to tease your hair until it is the length you would like. Smooth the layer of hair down so the hair is rounded out or bouffant. Remember to use a lot of hairspray.
Test out the hairstyles with your costume to see what style fits best. You do not want to wait until the last minute. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time on the big night to get your hairstyle perfect.
